LONDON office construction has risen by 44% compared with a year ago, according to a survey.
Drivers Jonas Deloitte’s latest London Office Crane Survey says that 9.2m sq ft of office space is currently under construction in the capital – up by 28% on six months ago.
Anthony Duggan, head of research, Drivers Jonas Deloitte, said:
“While construction continues to rise in the core City and West End markets, our research also shows that activity has returned to King’s Cross and the Docklands, as well as a further increase in activity along the Southbank.
“This is a sign that developers feel that the low levels of construction (compared to historic trends) and lower building costs are compelling. Positively, pre-letting is again a feature of the market, which should be a key focus for those with appropriate sites.”
Of the 2.7m sq ft of space currently under construction in London’s West End, half is due to complete next year, setting it up to be a recording breaking year for office builds in the West End.

SERVICED office operator Orega is to open a new business centre in central London.
The Staines-based office group has signed a deal on prime office space in Finsbury Pavement, near Moorgate.
When it opens in August, the business centre will occupy two floors in a newly refurbished nine storey office block.
The ten year lease of the air conditioned serviced offices gives Orega its eleventh business centre.
Zach Douglas, joint MD of Orega, says: “After the successful launch of our Hammersmith business centre just two months ago, we have accelerated our opening programme in London to capitalise on the weight of demand for quality, flexible office space.
“Finsbury Pavement is a fantastic location and has the wonderful bonus of offering clients a slice of outdoor life in the heart of the city via their own personal roof terrace. We think this feature gives our offices an extra dimension which will have universal appeal.”

NEW MOTHERS are more likely to return to the workplace sooner if they can breastfeed at work, according to new research.
Academics at the Institute for Social & Economic Research, at Essex University, say that mums are 8% more likely to go back to the workplace within six months, and 5% more likely within four months, if breastfeeding is welcomed.
The research also showed that breastfeedingly-friendly offices will only make a difference to mums who stayed in education until they were at least 19. For less-well educated mothers, breastfeedingly in the workplace is not a driver for an earlier return to work.
Dr Emilia Del Bono, from ISER, is co author of the research with Dr Chiara Pronzato at the Università di Torino. Dr Del Bono says:
“Lower educated mothers have shorter maternity leave periods due to income constraints, so the availability of breastfeeding facilities has little impact on their decision to return to work. More educated mothers, by contrast, have more choice in relation to the duration of their maternity leave and are also more likely to breastfeed longer, so the availability of breastfeeding facilities is more important in this group.”
The research was carried out using a sample of over 3,000 mothers.

SERVICED office provider i2 Office has launched its new business lounge membership club.
The i2 Access scheme gives members access to professional places to work, relax or have a meeting at any of the i2 Office businesses centres around the country for a fixed monthly fee.
Speaking to Offices.org.uk last December, i2 Office Chief Executive explained the benefits of this kind of club for mobile workers:
“It’s great to think you can come into town and work from one of the coffee chains but it’s noisy, they play the music too loud and they turf you out if you don’t buy enough coffee.
“Here, you’re able to work in a professional business environment, meet people such as suppliers or clients, book a meeting room or meet informally in one of our cafes, get a cup of coffee and do it properly rather than trying to do it round the table in a coffee shop.”
i2 Office, based in Milton Keynes, now operates serviced office centres across London and in Leeds, Manchester, Watford and Glasgow.
