Great Portland Estates (GPE) has secured planning permission from Camden Council for a significant redevelopment at Whittington House, WC1, a prominent building located in Bloomsbury, close to Tottenham Court Road and the newly revitalised Elizabeth Line hub.

The approved scheme will see the 74,500 sq ft property – originally designed by Richard Seifert & Partners – comprehensively refurbished to create eight floors of Grade A, energy-efficient workspace, complete with a rooftop terrace and pavilion overlooking Alfred Place. The redevelopment aims to deliver a high-quality headquarters building designed around sustainability, flexibility and wellbeing, with features such as enhanced natural light, improved thermal performance and spaces suitable for hybrid working models.

GPE expects construction to begin in 2025, with completion targeted for early 2027. Once complete, Whittington House will form part of the developer’s growing cluster of West End offices around Tottenham Court Road, joining nearby assets including The Gable Building and The Courtyard Building to create a combined 220,000 sq ft managed workspace campus.

Commenting on the approval, Toby Courtauld, Chief Executive of GPE, said the scheme “continues our commitment to delivering best-in-class sustainable workspace in London’s most connected locations”, adding that the company continues to see strong demand for high-quality, flexible office space despite market headwinds.
