Office-to-homes permitted development rules made permanent
TEMPORARY permitted development rights which enabled thousands of offices to be turned in to homes without planning permission have been made permanent, the government announced today.
The three-year permitted development rights were introduced in 2013 and have seen almost 4,000 office conversions go ahead.
The Department for Communities and Government today announced that the scheme would be made permanent and would be extended to allow office buildings to be demolished in favour of new residential buildings.
Housing and Planning Minister Brandon Lewis said:
“We’re determined that, both in Whitehall and in town halls, everything is done to get the homes we need built. Today’s measures will mean we can tap into the potential of underused buildings to offer new homes for first-time buyers and families long into the future, breathing new life into neighbourhoods and at the same time protecting our precious green belt.”
Areas which were exempted from the relaxing of rules, including the City of London and Manchester city centre, will continue to be exempt until May 2019.
